This week, we have: Austria Day!
The 26th October is The Austrian National Day. This relates to political developments after WWII.At the end of the war, Austria was occupied by the four Allied Forces who divided the Country into four zones. The negotiations over a state treaty putting an end to the occupation could finally be concluded in the spring of 1955. On October 26th 1955, the Austrian parliament passed the constitutional law on permanent neutrality, which has been celebrated as the Austrian National Day since 1965.
So we thought, why not showcase some of the fabulous Wines coming out of Austria, including a couple of native Austrian grapes.
All these are subject to change...but...here's the lineup!
- First up, we will start you off with Heidi Schrock, Furmint- Neusiedlersee, Burgenland; This wine has a unique profile with aromas of Golden Apple & Quince as well as delicate notes of Chamomile & Hay. The palate is beautifully textured & crisp with a well built body & a very concentrated & long finish. The wine spent almost one year ageing on it’s fine lees, gaining a very interesting texture on the lively palate.
- Secondly we have Loimer, Gruner Veltliner- Kamptal; Austria’s most famous White Grape variety, this has aromas of Yellow Apple, Pineapple & Marigolds fill the nose, with gentle hints of White Pepper. The palate is structured & precise with notes of Lemon Jelly, Dried Apple, Pear & Juicy Oranges, balanced by refreshing acidity & some saltiness. The finish is Citrusy, long & robust.
- Finally we will be trying a glass of Funkstille, Zweigelt- Niederosterreich; Zweigelt is a fairly new Red Grape variety created in Austria from a crossing of Saint-Laurent with Blaufrankisch. Cherry, Berry, Plum & Forest Fruit flavours blend together to make this incredibly juicy red wine, which is full-bodied, vibrant with a subtle note of Vanilla.
Serious wines, for (not very) serious folk...should be an absolute spanker!!
