A Grape to Grain Guide To Henschke
The Henschke regularly comes out as the winner, when it appears in one of our regular wine tastings. The family winemaker continues to produce exceptional wines from vineyards in the Barossa area of South Australia, even after over 150 years.
It is one of Australia's oldest family-owned wineries and is currently run by sixth generation winemakers. We are going to take some time to introduce you to this iconic producer, as well as some of the world-class wines which they produce.
The History of Henschke
Henschke was established in 1868 and has continued to produce wine through six generations of family grape-growing. Today, the sixth generation are all actively involved in the family business.
Johann Henschke holds the position of winemaker and viticulturist. Andreas Henschke has over 10 years of experience as an engineer and uses this to provide expert advice to support Henschke's environmental commitments, which includes sustainable water management.
Then, Justine Henschke has worked in Marketing and PR on three continents and for almost a decade she has managed all brand activity and PR for this iconic producer.
The Henschke Vineyards
Henschke wines come from vines in three different sub-sections of the Barossa area of Australia. They are the Eden Valley, the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills. Let's take a look at them in some more details.
The Eden Valley region has been producing wine since about 1866, so the Henschke family was truly their at the birth of this wine region. Eden Valley has garnered particular acclaim for wines from the Riesling grape variety, due to the cooler climate.
Next up is the Barossa Valley. Silesian immigrates, (such as the Henschke family), began arriving in Barossa as early as 1842. This area is known first and foremost for their big and booming GSM, (Grenache, Syrah/Shiraz and Mourvèdre/Mataro) blends.
Last, but by no means least, is the Adelaide Hills. This strip of land synonymous with the Mounty Lofty Ranges. It excels in a wealth of international varieties, with variations in altitude allowing for many different styles of wine to be grown.
